While most assume that brakes are responsible for stopping your car, the answer is a bit more complex. The friction of your tires against the road is what slows down and stops your car. The brakes are what’s responsible for stopping the wheels from spinning. It’s the job of the brake pads and brake discs to create the resistance needed to cause this action and each time your vehicle brakes the discs begin to wear.

In order to maintain your braking system, there are two important things every car owner should do: check your brake fluid regularly and have the brake pads and brake discs inspected when necessary. It is also a good idea to service your cars brakes in the spring to prevent guide pins and pads sticking, causing premature brake wear.

Brake fluid, or hydraulic fluid, is another important part of what makes your brakes work. This fluid operates under high pressure and high temperature to help the various components in your brake system run smoothly. It’s important to ensure your vehicle’s brake fluid is good in condition to maintain its primary function. Over time, brake fluid will begin to degrade and will not work properly. Leaving contaminated hydraulic fluid in your system will slowly destroy brakes. Having your brake fluid periodically drained and replaced can help to ensure that the system continues working properly.

Do you hear a noise when you brake? Does your car vibrate when you come to even a gradual stop? Those are signs of the brake pads and disc wearing down. It’s recommended that drivers check their brakes every tire rotation (10,000kms) or seasonal tire change over, but if you’re already noticing signs of deterioration then a check-up should be performed immediately. Bring your vehicle into a trusted repair shop and let them know the nature of your visit. If the brake pads are showing wear to the extent that much of the pad can’t be seen, then your mechanic will recommend having them replaced.

Now that you’re familiar with how your brakes work, we recommend not taking any chances with their care. If you’ve noticed signs that your braking system is due for maintenance, schedule an
